Leeds - Film School (Live Project) 

Introduction

 

This project is about becoming an expert in the skills that define you as CITYzen Agents. You are invited to manage and plan all the work required other than this briefing note. The tutors will be your critical friends.

 

 

Live Projects

In Dr. Rachel Sara’s definition “The live project is defined here as a type of design project that is distinct from a typical studio project in it’s engagement of real clients or users, in real-time settings. Students are taken out of the studio setting, and repositioned in the ‘real-world’. This external involvement tends to result in students producing something that is of value to the client/user group, which might range from ideas, feasibility reports, or research, to a completed design scheme, a construction or other intervention” (Sara, 2004).

Architecture live projects are diverse, global and are identified by different names dependant on location. The Live Project Network (Liveprojectsnetwork.org, 2014) is an open source repository showcasing live projects. The repository is a good resource of recent projects and enables contact and sharing with other live project educators. The Project Office, our in-house consultancy, is a contributor to the Live Project Network.

 

 

Film School

Leeds Beckett University are committed to developing a new film school building by 2020 for the Film, Music & Performing Arts School, part of the Arts Environment and Technology faculty. However, Leeds Beckett Enterprise Services are proposing that the project should have wider scope. The proposal is for the development of a film, TV and sound production “village” in Leeds which will house the film facilities of our academic activity (new Faculty building), but also a great deal of Enterprise and Business activity. This is a much more ambitious idea than just a Film School. Enterprise Services have prepared a report for a Film school ‘village’ for the University, partners and funders alike. This report is available to you and is the starting point of their and your project.
