Leeds School of Architecture
Christopher Hinitt
I started out in architecture by studying the HNC in Construction Management at Bradford College part time whilst working in an Architects practice. I felt there was something missing from this course; design! I then began the journey of architecture and studied the BA in Plymouth, first year of the masters at Birmingham then transferred to Leeds.
I now have over 10 years practical work experience and enjoy the theory and design elements of studying architecture.
My final year thesis project is located in Bradford; a post industrial town in West Yorkshire that grew from the textile trade. The project looks into its decline to current day deterioration and abandonment, which has formed large urban voids thorough, the concept of Terrain Vague, where the promise and possibility can be imagined in these urban derelict voids.
The project looks to the past textile trade for answers of what went wrong and todays current trends in environmentally conscious fashion and textile production. The project develops a new sustainable and organic method of producing wool from raw material, to cleaning, natural dyeing, spinning and weaving. The project reuses a dilapidated burnt down mill and infill’s a new program providing resilience and legacy to re-establish one of Bradford historic woollen districts through education and community.
